Vacancy: Two 3-year PhD student positions in dynamic meteorology at the Geophysical Institute, University of Bergen, Norway
 
The meteorology group of the Geophysical Institute at the University of Bergen is looking for two highly motivated PhD students interested in studying Arctic polar lows and the interaction of baroclinic cyclones with steep topography, respectively. The research is part of the project “High Impact Weather in the Arctic” (HIMWARC), which will commence July 2011. HIMWARC aims to extend our fundamental knowledge and concomitantly restrain present levels of uncertainty with respect to future changes of high impact weather in the Arctic. The 3-year PhD in the field of dynamical meteorology is integrated in the Bergen School of Meteorology and the successful candidate has the opportunity to be affiliated with the Norwegian Research School for Climate Dynamics (www.resclim.no)

The successful candidates will develop dynamical concepts and utilize an idealized modeling framework to test and validate ideas. The available modelling framework will comprise simplified linear and non-linear models as well as meso-scale numerical models. Thus the candidates will get the opportunity to learn about, and make use of, a wide variety of numerical models, which are common practice in the field. In addition the candidates will work with observational data, up to date reanalysis products as well as the upcoming IPCC AR5 climate projection datasets. Basic experience in numerical modeling (e.g., FORTRAN and Matlab) and knowledge of atmospheric dynamics will be of advantage.
