Postdoctoral and/or Research Scientist
Climate Dynamics
The Atmospheric and Oceanic Sciences Program at Princeton University
seeks one or more outstanding postdoctoral or more experienced
research scientists to perform numerical and theoretical research in
projects exploring decadal-scale variability and predictability of
the climate system, with a particular focus on the Atlantic.
The overall goals of the projects are to (i) improve our
understanding of the mechanisms of climate variability, (ii) evaluate
potential predictability of the climate system, (iii) develop the
necessary tools to make climate predictions starting from observed
ocean states, and (iv) conduct ensembles of climate predictions
starting from estimates of the observed state of the ocean.
Interactions between variability, predictability, and changing
radiative forcing will be a key focus, and emphasis is on the
Atlantic and decadal timescales. The research will make extensive use
of the NOAA Geophysical Fluid Dynamics Laboratory (GFDL) CM2.1.
global climate model, future high-resolution climate models currently
under development at GFDL, as well as more idealized and theoretical
models and will involve collaboration with GFDL scientists.
The selected candidates will address one or more of the goals
articulated above, and will have one or more of the following
attributes: (a) a strong background in research on climate dynamics
or a closely related field, (b) extensive experience using and
analyzing state of the art climate models, (c) a strong background
in data assimilation and its use for climate prediction efforts, (d)
strong diagnostic skills in analyzing large data sets, and/or (e) a
theoretical background in ocean-atmosphere dynamics. The position is
open to both recent Ph.Ds, as well as candidates beyond the
postdoctoral stage. Salary will be commensurate with experience.
Applicants are asked to send a curriculum vitae, a statement of
research experience and interests, and the names and contact
information (phone, e-mail and address) of at least three references
to be sent to Anna Valerio (apval at princeton.edu), Princeton
University, Atmospheric and Oceanic Sciences Program, 205 Sayre Hall,
300 Forrestal Road, Princeton, NJ 08540, USA. Electronic
applications are welcome. Applications received on or before November
30, 2007 will receive first consideration and others will be
considered until the position is filled. Princeton University is an
Equal Opportunity/Affirmative Action employer. For general
information about applying to Princeton University please see http://
